Nigeria Upgrades Alaoji-Onitsha Transmission Line

The Nigeria — Transmission Company of Nigeria, in partnership with the African Development Bank, has commenced the reconstruction and upgrade of the 138km Alaoji-Onitsha 330kV transmission line. This project will transform the existing single-circuit line into a double-circuit quad-conductor line, quadrupling its capacity and enhancing grid efficiency. Compensation payments were made to Project Affected Persons in Nigeria — Abia State and Nigeria — Oyo State, who have been given a 90-day grace period to vacate the Right of Way. The project, expected to be completed within 18 months, aims to significantly increase electricity transmission, reduce losses, and improve power supply to the Alaoji and Port Harcourt axes, Nigeria — Abia State, and the entire South East region. Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu is commended for the timely release of funds and for approving a ₦3.3 trillion payment plan to settle long-standing debts in the power sector, which has faced persistent infrastructure challenges and grid collapses.
