Aceh Publicly Flogs Couple

A couple was publicly flogged 100 times each in Indonesia — Aceh, Indonesia, for having sex outside of marriage, under the province's Sharia law. Four other individuals also received lashes for offenses such as physical contact with the opposite sex or drinking alcohol. Rajesh Kana, an official from the local prosecutors' office, stated that Indonesia — Aceh implements Islamic law and carries out such punishments for violations. Amnesty International has condemned the practice as cruel and inhuman. Indonesia — Aceh is the only region in Indonesia that enforces Sharia law, operating under a special autonomy arrangement with the central government.
