The expansion by 6K Additive, supported by the United States — United States Department of Defense grant and IPO capital, is expected to significantly increase the company's production capacity for critical metal powders. This will positively impact the defense, aerospace, and energy industries by securing a domestic supply chain for high-performance materials, potentially reducing reliance on foreign sources and enhancing national security.
6K Additive has officially broken ground on a major expansion of its global headquarters and manufacturing campus in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. This project, valued at $23.4 million, is being funded by a Defense Production Act Title III grant from the United States — United States Department of Defense and A$48 million (US$31.4 million) raised from 6K Additive's Initial Public Offering on the Australian Securities Exchange. The expansion will increase 6K Additive's production capacity five-fold, from 200 to 1,000 metric tons annually, and will introduce new commercial capabilities including dedicated facilities for refractory metals and ingot melting. This initiative aims to establish a 100% domestic supply chain for materials critical to United States national security, supporting the hypersonics, defense, nuclear, energy, and aerospace sectors. Frank Roberts, CEO of 6K Additive, emphasized the importance of this combined federal and private funding in fast-tracking their vision for a secure and sustainable domestic supply of critical metals.
