Nikon and its subsidiary Nikon — Nikon Instruments have developed a live cell observation system that has been selected for research on the International Space Station (ISS). This system, named Nikon Experimentation Microscope in Orbit (NEMO), will be used to observe and evaluate cell behavior and biological tissue responses to pharmaceuticals in microgravity. The project is supported by the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) and involves a contract between United States — NASA (NASA) and Nikon — Nikon Instruments The system will be launched to the International Space Station via the Northrop Grumman Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) 24 mission in early April 2026. BioServe Space Technologies also contributed by developing a cell culture incubator and automated media perfusion system to be integrated with Nikon's system. This research aims to understand the effects of gravity on biological tissues, which could lead to insights into aging and diseases, attracting attention from global life science companies.
