A collaborative study by CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology and L.V. Prasad Eye Institute in India has revealed alarming levels of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacteria causing eye infections. Over 45% of bacterial isolates from patient samples were found to be multidrug-resistant, including vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and extensively drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae. The study, co-led by Karthik Bharadwaj, Divya Tej Sowpati, and Joveeta Joseph, highlighted widespread resistance to commonly used antibiotics like fluoroquinolones, challenging the reliance on empirical therapy. Experts, including Vinay K. Nandicoori and Prashant Garg, emphasized the urgent need for microbiology-guided diagnosis, targeted treatment approaches, and strengthened antimicrobial stewardship to curb the growing threat of AMR, which reflects a broader environmental issue.
