TikTok Builds Second Finland Data Center

ByteDance — TikTok Shop, a subsidiary of ByteDance, announced plans to invest 1 billion euros ($1.16 billion) to construct a second data center in Finland — Lahti, southern Finland. This investment is part of ByteDance — TikTok Shop's 12 billion euro European data sovereignty initiative, aiming to store European user data within the continent and enhance data protection for over 200 million users. The decision follows ByteDance avoiding a U.S. ban over data protection concerns and increasing pressure from European nations, including the European Union, on social media companies to safeguard user data. Finland was chosen for its favorable climate, low-cost energy, and stable regulatory environment, attracting other tech giants like Microsoft and Alphabet Inc.. While local leaders like Finland — Lahti Mayor Niko Kyynäräinen welcomed the investment, some Finnish politicians, including former minister of economic affairs Wille Rydman, had previously raised security and transparency concerns regarding ByteDance — TikTok Shop's first data center project in Kouvola, which is expected to be operational by the end of this year. The second data center in Finland — Lahti is scheduled for completion by 2027.
