A new study by Toxics Link, titled 'Soiled with Lead: from Battery Recycling', has revealed alarming levels of lead contamination in soil near battery recycling units across Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh in India. The study, which analyzed 23 soil samples, found lead concentrations ranging from 100 ppm to 43,800 ppm, with over half of the samples exceeding the 5,000 ppm benchmark for a Hazardous Contaminated Site as per the Environment Protection (Management of Contaminated Sites) Rules, 2025. Unexpectedly, higher average lead levels were detected near authorized recycling units compared to unauthorized ones, pointing to gaps in management. This contamination poses serious public health risks, especially for children and pregnant women, and environmental concerns, including potential pollution of groundwater and surface water. The World Health Organization and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation reports are cited, emphasizing the global health burden of lead exposure. Recommendations include enhanced monitoring, regular health assessments, stricter curbs on unregulated recycling, and stronger enforcement of extended producer responsibility norms by the India — Central Pollution Control Board.
