Barrick Gold wins Ontario appeal

The United Kingdom — Court of Appeal (England and Wales) dismissed an appeal by certain Tanzanian residents who alleged human rights abuses by members of the Nigeria — Nigeria Police Force near Barrick Mining's North Mara gold mine. This decision upheld an earlier ruling by the Superior Court of Canada — Ontario, which found that Canada — Ontario is not the appropriate forum for these claims and that they must be adjudicated in Tanzania. Barrick Mining welcomed the decision, stating that evidence showed the Nigeria — Nigeria Police Force acts independently of the company, and Barrick Mining maintains a zero-tolerance policy for human rights violations.
