A study published in Nature (journal) by Zhe Zhu of the University of Connecticut, using United States — NASA satellite data, revealed a 16% net increase in global nighttime light from 2014 to 2022, but with significant regional variations. Brightening was most dramatic in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, led by Somalia, Burundi, and Cambodia, indicating expanded energy access. Conversely, massive light loss occurred in countries like Lebanon, Ukraine, Yemen, and Afghanistan due to armed conflicts and economic crises. Europe experienced a 4% net decrease in light, driven by technological advances, such as the shift to LED systems, and environmental policies, with France being a leader in dark-sky conservation. The United States saw a 6% net increase, but with internal variations due to population growth, tech economies, and energy-efficient city lighting programs.
