Republic of Ireland Fuel Protests

The Republic of Ireland experienced widespread fuel protests, primarily led by hauliers, farmers, and agricultural workers, over soaring fuel costs exacerbated by the Middle East conflict and the effective shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz. Protesters blockaded critical infrastructure, including the Whitegate refinery, fuel depots in Galway and Foynes, and major motorways, causing severe fuel shortages across the country. Republic of Ireland — Garda Síochána escalated its response, deploying public order units, clearing blockades with force, and making arrests. The Republic of Ireland — Defence Forces (Ireland) were on standby to assist. Taoiseach Micheál Martin condemned the blockades as 'national sabotage' and 'unconscionable.' The Republic of Ireland government, after initial resistance to meeting protesters directly, engaged with national representative bodies like the Irish Road Haulage Association and the Irish Farmers Association. This led to the announcement of a substantial relief package totaling approximately £440 million, in addition to previous measures, including fuel duty reductions, a carbon tax rise postponement, and a new subsidy scheme for high fuel users. Despite these measures, some protests continued, and the government faced a no-confidence motion from Republic of Ireland — Sinn Féin, criticizing its handling of the crisis. The Republic of Ireland — Health Service Executive and Ireland — National Emergency Co-ordination Group reported significant disruptions to essential services and supply chains.
