New research conducted on mice by Francisca Concha Celume and her team at the University of Chile, and published in Frontiers Media, suggests that artificial sweeteners like Sucralose and Stevia may have unexpected health impacts that can be passed on to offspring for up to two generations. The study found that consumption of these non-nutritive sweeteners led to changes in gene expression, glucose tolerance, and the fecal microbiome in mice. Specifically, Sucralose showed more consistent and persistent negative effects, including impaired glucose tolerance and a more pathogenic gut microbiome, which lasted for two generations. Stevia also impacted gene expression and the gut microbiome, though its effects were smaller and generally did not extend beyond the first generation. These changes could potentially increase vulnerability to metabolic health conditions like diabetes. While the research identifies associations and not causation, it raises questions about the long-term influence of these additives on metabolism and highlights the need for further investigation into their effects on humans.
