New TB Vaccines Show Limited Efficacy

The phase-3 trial results for the VPM1002 and Immuvac vaccines, while showing safety, indicate limited efficacy against all forms of tuberculosis. This could temper market expectations for companies like Serum Life Science Europe GmbH and Cadila Pharmaceuticals, potentially affecting their stock performance or future investment in these specific vaccine candidates. However, the partial effectiveness, especially of VPM1002 against extrapulmonary TB, still presents a public health benefit and potential market for targeted applications.
Phase-3 trial results published in The BMJ indicate that two new tuberculosis (TB) vaccines, VPM1002 and Immuvac, are safe for use in adults and children in India. However, the trials, conducted by researchers including those from the India — Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), found that the vaccines may not provide protection against all forms of the infectious bacterial disease. VPM1002, developed by Serum Life Science Europe GmbH, showed 50.4% effectiveness against extrapulmonary TB across all age groups, including adults, and protection against all TB forms in children aged six to under-14. Immuvac, co-developed by the India — Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Cadila Pharmaceuticals, provided protection against extrapulmonary TB only in children aged six to under-10. Neither vaccine protected underweight individuals, suggesting a need for nutritional support alongside vaccination. The PreVenTB trial involved over 12,700 household contacts of TB patients across 18 sites in India.
