A new study by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, published in List of Nature Research journals, has revealed that immunological aging follows different dynamics between men and women. The research, co-authored by Maria Sopena-Rios, Aida Ripoll-Cladellas, and directed by Marta Mele, utilized single-cell RNA sequencing and the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer to analyze blood samples from nearly 1,000 people. Findings indicate that women experience more pronounced immune changes with age, increasing inflammatory immune cells and potentially explaining higher rates of autoimmune diseases. In men, changes are less extensive but show an increase in pre-leukemic alterations, which could explain the prevalence of certain blood cancers. This study establishes a foundation for incorporating biological sex into precision medicine for aging, aiming to develop tailored preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies.
