Nigeria Launches Carbon Capture Platform

The Nigeria — National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, in collaboration with the Africa Carbon Management Technology and Innovation Centre of Excellence and the Clean Energy Ministerial Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage Initiative, launched a Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) Initiative Platform in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. This initiative, described by Innocent Barikor as a major milestone, aims to accelerate Nigeria's transition to a low-carbon economy, deepen industrial decarbonisation, and position Nigeria as a key player in global climate action. The platform will promote carbon management technologies, facilitate research and innovation, build technical capacity, and encourage public-private partnerships. Owunari Georgewill of University of Port Harcourt highlighted the university's role in hosting the initiative, while Richard Victor Osu emphasized the vision to make Nigeria a regional leader in carbon management. Juho Lipponen affirmed international support for Nigeria's CCUS efforts.
