Zeaxanthin Boosts Cancer Immunotherapy Efficacy

Researchers at the University of Chicago, led by Chen Jing, have discovered that zeaxanthin, a plant-based compound, can significantly enhance the immune system's ability to fight cancer. Published in Cell Reports Medicine, the study shows that zeaxanthin improves the function of CD8+ T cells, which are crucial for destroying cancer cells. In mouse studies, zeaxanthin slowed tumor growth, especially when combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors. Laboratory experiments also demonstrated that zeaxanthin enhanced human T cells' ability to destroy melanoma, multiple myeloma, and glioblastoma cells. The findings suggest that this inexpensive and widely available nutrient could complement existing cancer treatments, opening a new field of nutritional immunology.
