Sonia Gandhi Criticizes India Delimitation

Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of the India — Indian National Congress Parliamentary Party, has strongly criticized the Indian government's proposed delimitation exercise, calling it 'extremely dangerous' and an 'assault on the Constitution itself'. She argues that the real issue is delimitation, not women's reservation, which was already settled with the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023. Gandhi alleges that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is rushing the process for political gain and to further delay the caste census. She emphasizes that any increase in India — Lok Sabha seats must be politically equitable, warning that states successful in family planning should not be disadvantaged. The criticism comes ahead of a special parliamentary session from April 16 to 18, where amendments to the Women's Reservation Act are expected to be introduced for implementation in 2029. Gandhi also points out the delay in the 2021 Census and the government's shifting stance on a caste census, accusing it of 'one-upmanship' and a 'my way or the highway' approach to decision-making.
