The positive results from China Grand Pharmaceutical — Sirtex Medical's DOORwaY90 study are expected to significantly boost investor confidence in the company and potentially increase the adoption of SIR-Spheres Y-90 resin microspheres in the healthcare market. This medical breakthrough could lead to a re-evaluation of conventional approaches to liver-directed cancer therapy, impacting the broader biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.
China Grand Pharmaceutical — Sirtex Medical announced landmark 12-month results from its DOORwaY90 study, a pivotal U.S. trial of Y-90 selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) using partition dosimetry for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The study achieved a 90% complete response rate and a 99% overall response rate, with 100% local tumor control. These durable responses, lasting beyond six months for 75% of patients, and the preservation of liver function in over 95% of patients, highlight the efficacy of SIR-Spheres Y-90 resin microspheres. The results were presented at the Society of Interventional Radiology Annual Meeting. Armeen Mahvash of MD Anderson Cancer Center and Matt Schmidt, CEO of China Grand Pharmaceutical — Sirtex Medical, emphasized the significance of these findings in advancing liver-directed cancer treatment. SIR-Spheres Y-90 resin microspheres are already approved by the United States — Food and Drug Administration for both metastatic colorectal cancer and unresectable HCC.
