A new study, primarily using United States — NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and led by Konstantin Getman of Pennsylvania State University, has found that young Sun-like stars dim their X-ray output more quickly than previously thought. The research, published in The Astrophysical Journal, observed eight clusters of stars between 45 million and 750 million years old, revealing they unleash only a quarter to a third of the expected X-rays. This rapid 'quieting' is attributed to a less efficient internal generation of magnetic fields. Co-authors Vladimir Airapetian of United States — NASA's United States — Goddard Space Flight Center and Eric Feigelson of Pennsylvania State University highlighted that this dimming is beneficial for the formation of life on orbiting planets, as excessive X-rays can erode atmospheres and prevent the formation of organic molecules. Data from the International — European Space Agency's Gaia satellite and the Rosatom mission also contributed to the study.
