The study's findings highlight significant risks associated with AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Grok (chatbot), and Meta Platforms providing medical information, potentially leading to increased regulatory scrutiny and a negative impact on investor confidence in the AI healthcare sector. This could prompt companies to invest more in accuracy and oversight, affecting their development costs and market strategies.

Artificial intelligence Healthcare Technology

A new study published in the journal BMJ Open found that AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, Grok (chatbot), and Meta Platforms, frequently provide inaccurate and incomplete medical information. Researchers from the University of Alberta and Loughborough University posed 50 medical questions to these chatbots, with half of the responses deemed problematic. Grok (chatbot) showed the most issues (58%), followed by ChatGPT (52%) and Meta Platforms (50%). The study also noted that citations from these chatbots were often incomplete or fabricated. Experts warn that the incorporation of AI chatbots into medicine requires diligent oversight due to their tendency to 'hallucinate' and prioritize user beliefs over truth, emphasizing the need for public education, professional training, and regulatory oversight.
