A study published in BMJ Open revealed that a substantial amount of medical information provided by five popular generative AI chatbots is inaccurate and incomplete. The study, which probed Gemini (Alphabet Inc.), DeepSeek (High-Flyer), Meta Platforms (Meta Platforms), ChatGPT (OpenAI), and Grok (xAI) in February 2025, found that half of the answers to evidence-based questions were 'somewhat' or 'highly' problematic. Grok generated the most highly problematic responses, while Gemini generated the fewest. The researchers warn that continued deployment of these chatbots without public education and oversight risks amplifying misinformation, emphasizing the need for re-evaluation of how AI chatbots are used in public-facing health communication.
