The ongoing conflict in Lebanon, involving Israel and Hezbollah, and the wider United States-Israel war with Iran, create significant geopolitical instability. This could lead to increased volatility in energy markets due to potential disruptions in the Middle East, and negatively impact defense sector stocks as military spending rises.

Defense Energy International Relations

Ten countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan, have condemned the killings of United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon and called for an urgent end to hostilities. This comes amidst escalating violence where Israeli attacks have killed over 2,000 people and displaced 1.2 million in Lebanon since March. The United Nations has indicated that one peacekeeper was killed by an Israeli tank projectile and two by an improvised explosive device likely placed by Hezbollah. The conflict in Lebanon intensified after Hezbollah fired missiles at Israel on March 2, following the United States-Israel war on Iran which began on February 28. Iran retaliated with strikes on Israel and Gulf states. A fragile two-week ceasefire between the United States, Israel, and Iran is currently in effect, but Iran insists that the war in Lebanon must be included in any broader peace agreement, a demand Israel has rejected, instead calling for Hezbollah's disarmament.
