OpenAI released its 'Capability Gap findings' report for India, identifying the nation as one of the world's most advanced AI markets, especially in coding, data analysis, and complex reasoning. India ranks among the top five nations globally in thinking capability usage per person, with a four-fold growth in Codex users within two weeks of its February 2026 launch. Despite this rapid growth, AI adoption in India is highly concentrated in a few urban hubs like India — Delhi NCR, India — Bengaluru, India — Hyderabad, and India — Chennai, with the top ten cities accounting for about 50% of all AI users. This concentration is three times higher than in comparable countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, and Germany. The report also notes significant intra-regional gaps in advanced use cases, with data analysis usage up to 30 times higher in leading cities. Beyond these urban centers, meaningful AI use cases are emerging in education and health in states like India — Assam, India — Odisha, India — Manipur, India — Tripura, India — Chhattisgarh, India — Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, India — Chandigarh, India — Himachal Pradesh, and India — Kerala. Oliver Jay, Managing Director - International at OpenAI, emphasized the need to expand access, build skills, and enable more meaningful AI use across India to close this capability gap.
