The United States — Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has placed 10 states in Nigeria on high alert for a potential cholera outbreak. This warning follows forecasts from the Nigeria — Federal Ministry of Interior (Nigeria) and the Japan — Japan Meteorological Agency predicting heavy rainfall and flooding between April 13 and 17, 2026, in Nigeria — Adamawa State, Nigeria — Enugu State, Nigeria — Kaduna State, Nigeria — Kogi State, Nigeria — Niger State, Nigeria — Osun State, Nigeria — Oyo State, Nigeria — Plateau State, Nigeria — Taraba State, and Nigeria — Kwara State. Jide Idris, Director-General of the United States — Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stated that these conditions coincide with the seasonal period when cholera cases typically rise, and surveillance data already show increasing infections. Flooding can contaminate water sources and disrupt sanitation, creating ideal conditions for rapid disease spread. Beyond cholera, the affected states also face heightened risks of other diarrhoeal diseases, mosquito-borne infections like malaria, injuries, and disruptions to healthcare access.
