Florida Special Session Delayed, Agenda Expanded

United States — Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has delayed the state's special legislative session on redistricting by one week, pushing it from April 20 to April 28, and extending until May 1. In addition to redistricting, Ron DeSantis has expanded the session's agenda to include two of his priorities that failed during the regular legislative session: a bill to expand vaccine exemptions for public K-12 students and legislation aimed at protecting consumers' interactions with artificial intelligence. Senate President Ben Albritton has stated that the Senate will await Ron DeSantis's proposed maps and plans to refile identical versions of the AI and Medical Freedom bills. House Speaker Daniel Pérez, however, has previously favored federal-level AI regulation, aligning with Donald Trump's executive order, which caused the AI bill to stall in the House. The redistricting effort is supported by the White House to help Republicans maintain control of the United States — United States House of Representatives. The vaccine bill, supported by parental rights advocates but opposed by pediatricians, would create a 'conscience' category for parents to opt out of immunizations and require healthcare providers to offer alternative vaccine schedules. The AI bill seeks to establish rights for parents regarding children's interactions with AI chatbots, require disclosure when interacting with AI systems, and prohibit United States — Florida government agencies from contracting with AI firms tied to 'foreign countries of concern' like China and Russia. Nikki Fried, chairperson of the United States — Florida Democratic Party, strongly opposes the redistricting effort, calling it a 'Ron DeSantis vanity project'.
