South Sudan Mass Grave Discovery

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan expressed grave concern over the discovery of human remains in South Sudan — Jonglei State during road works. This finding suggests that the true human cost of renewed violence in South Sudan may be significantly greater than currently known. Initial reports indicate the remains could be combatants, but the possibility of civilians or victims of serious international human rights violations is not ruled out. The discovery comes amid renewed conflict, including intense fighting around Akobo between the People s Defense Force and the Sudan People s Liberation Army-in-Opposition. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan called for immediate securing and preservation of the sites, independent and impartial investigations adhering to international standards like the Minnesota Protocol, and accountability for those responsible. Commissioners Yasmin Sooka, Barney Afako, and Carlos Castresana Fernández emphasized the importance of forensic evidence, preventing impunity, and respecting families' rights to know the fate of their relatives.
