New research from the University of Southern California's Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center suggests that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may increase the risk of lung cancer in non-smoking Americans under the age of 50, particularly women. Lead investigator Jorge Nieto speculates that pesticide residues on commercially produced foods could be the unknown environmental risk factor. The study, which surveyed 187 lung cancer patients diagnosed by age 50, found that these patients had higher Healthy Eating Index scores and consumed more produce and whole grains than the general United States population. This counter-intuitive finding challenges long-held beliefs about healthy eating and cancer prevention. Further research is needed to confirm the link by directly measuring pesticide levels in patients. The study received funding from various organizations including AstraZeneca, F.
