The establishment of the 'Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool' by India, backed by a sovereign guarantee, is expected to stabilize maritime trade and reduce insurance costs for vessels, positively impacting import-export operations. India's diversification of energy imports from regions like the United States, Australia, and Americas will enhance energy security and reduce market volatility related to the Strait of Hormuz.
India's Informal Group of Ministers (IGoM), chaired by Rajnath Singh, convened its fourth meeting on April 18, 2026, to review the volatile situation in West Asia and assess India's preparedness. Key outcomes include the Union Cabinet's approval of the 'Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool' with a sovereign guarantee of Rs 12,980 crore to ensure affordable maritime insurance for Indian trade, even through high-risk corridors. India has also diversified its energy import sources, securing crude, LNG, and LPG from the United States, Australia, and Americas, reducing dependence on the Strait of Hormuz. The government is promoting Piped Natural Gas (PNG) usage, setting up a Joint Working Group for petrochemical feedstock supply, and ensuring adequate stocks of essential commodities like fuel and fertilisers. Measures are also being taken to ensure the welfare of the Indian diaspora and to document best practices for a robust national response framework.
