Nepal Imposes Customs Duty on Indian Imports

A protest has erupted in Birgunj, Nepal, against the government's directive to impose customs duty on all items above NRS 100 imported from India. This move, aimed at controlling revenue leakage and supporting local markets, has led to strict monitoring by the India — Central Armed Police Forces and the International — Department of Customs at border points. Residents in border areas, who frequently rely on Indian markets for essentials, view this as an 'unannounced blockade' and a disruption to the traditional 'Roti-Beti' relationship between India and Nepal. The policy also includes a ban on Indian-registered private vehicles entering Nepal without authorization, causing significant problems in the Madhesh region. Various political parties, including the India — Jana Adhikar Party, civil society leaders, and local residents have expressed strong dissatisfaction.
