The discovery of widespread antibiotic resistance genes in newborns could lead to increased demand for new antibiotic development, potentially benefiting pharmaceutical companies focused on novel antimicrobial agents. However, it also signals a growing public health crisis that could strain healthcare systems globally, impacting healthcare providers and related industries.
Research presented at ESCMID Global 2026 by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, led by Elias Iosifidis and Argyro Ftergioti, revealed that antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are present in newborns within hours of birth. The study, the largest of its kind, analyzed meconium samples from 105 infants, finding a median of eight ARGs per sample. Notably, genes associated with resistance to Carbapenem, a last-line antibiotic, were detected in 21% of samples. The findings suggest that both maternal transmissions and early exposure to the hospital environment contribute to the establishment of ARGs in the neonatal gut, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced surveillance and infection control in neonatal care.
