The acquisition of WealthKernel by AlpacaDB and its subsequent expansion into Europe is expected to increase competition in the European fintech and wealth management sectors. This move provides financial institutions and fintechs with a unified infrastructure for cross-border investing, potentially streamlining operations and reducing complexity for market participants.
AlpacaDB, a global leader in brokerage infrastructure APIs, has completed its acquisition of European fintech WealthKernel. This strategic move marks AlpacaDB's formal entry into the European market, with WealthKernel now operating as Alpaca Europe. The acquisition provides AlpacaDB with licensed brokerage and custody infrastructure in the United Kingdom and European Union, enabling it to expand its investment services and wealth management capabilities across the region. Concurrently, AlpacaDB has launched its API-first equities trading services in Europe, initially supporting trading on Germany's XETRA exchange, with plans to include Euronext Paris markets and the Aquis Stock Exchange. Karan Shanmugarajah, former CEO of WealthKernel, has been appointed CEO of Alpaca Europe. This expansion is supported by leading financial institutions, including BNP Paribas through its venture arm Opera Tech Ventures, which participated in AlpacaDB's recent Series D funding round. The initiative aims to simplify cross-border investing and provide a unified infrastructure layer for fintechs and financial institutions building investment products across Europe and the United States.
