BlackBerry Report Reveals Messaging App Security Gaps

BlackBerry Secure Communications, a division of BlackBerry, released 'The State of Secure Communications 2026' report, revealing a critical gap between confidence in communications security and the reality of risk exposure among security decision-makers in government and critical infrastructure across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Singapore. The survey found that 83% of security leaders use Meta Platforms — WhatsApp for sensitive discussions, despite widespread misunderstanding of what encryption protects. A significant 98% rely on foreign-hosted platforms, exposing data sovereignty issues. The report also highlights that 88% of security leaders are confident in their current messaging app security, a confidence built on a fundamental misread of encryption capabilities, with many mistakenly believing it protects metadata or prevents impersonation. Intelligence agencies in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe have issued advisories about state-backed espionage attacks targeting Signal Foundation and Meta Platforms — WhatsApp accounts, underscoring the shifting threat landscape. Christine Gadsby of BlackBerry Secure Communications emphasized that consumer apps are not designed for high-security environments. The findings point to a need for governments and critical infrastructure to adopt purpose-built, secure communication platforms.
