New research led by APC Microbiome Ireland and University College Cork, and sponsored by the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee, has explored the mechanisms behind coffee's positive effects on the gut-brain axis. The study, published in Tata Communications, involved 31 coffee drinkers and 31 non-coffee drinkers, examining changes in their microbiome, mood, and stress levels. Findings indicate that both caffeinated and decaffeinated Coffee can improve mood and reduce stress. Decaffeinated Coffee was specifically linked to improved learning and memory, while caffeinated Coffee was associated with reduced anxiety and inflammation. John Cryan, a principal investigator, highlighted the potential for Coffee to be a beneficial intervention in a healthy diet.
