Researchers at the University of Cambridge, led by Ragnhildur Thóra Káradóttir, have published a study in Nature (journal) revealing that damage to the brain's white matter can trigger features associated with neurodegenerative diseases. The study found that localized myelin damage initiates a coordinated response in connected grey matter, which is part of the brain's repair mechanism. However, if myelin regeneration fails, this response becomes chronic inflammation, contributing to neurodegeneration.
