Senator John Owan Enoh, the Minister of State for Industry, commended the Nigeria — National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) and its Executive Secretary, Kamar Bakrin, for the significant reforms at the Nigeria Sugar Institute (NSI) in Ilorin, Kwara State. During an official visit, Senator John Owan Enoh emphasized the critical need for the Nigeria Sugar Institute to become fully functional to drive capacity development, technical expertise, and innovation within Nigeria's sugar sector. The Nigeria Sugar Institute, established in 2019 and commissioned in 2021, serves as a national hub for research, training, and technical support for the sugar industry. Since October 2023, Kamar Bakrin has led efforts to transform the Nigeria Sugar Institute from a dormant facility into an active, industry-facing center, implementing capacity-building programs for over 60 staff members and introducing structured training initiatives. The Nigeria Sugar Institute has also provided technical training to industry players, including Sunti Golden Sugar Estate and BUA Foods' LASUCO operations. The Federal Government of Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Nigeria — National Sugar Development Council and the Nigeria Sugar Institute in achieving their mandates, aiming to enhance the competitiveness and resilience of Nigeria's sugar industry.
