A study led by Dharambir Sanghera of the University of Oklahoma and published in PLOS Medicine identified two new genetic pathways contributing to cardiometabolic disease, which includes heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. The research analyzed genetic differences and their impact on the body's lipidome in Asian Indians, a population highly susceptible to these conditions. One identified lipid metabolite, when low, is linked to heart disease, suggesting potential for dietary or treatment-based increases. Another metabolite, when elevated, causes inflammation and increases insulin resistance, indicating a possible target for therapy.
