environmental services research

A new study led by Anglia Ruskin University, with contributions from Georgia (country) and Helen Wheeler, provides evidence of North American beaver expansion into the Canadian Arctic. The research, published in Ecosphere, combines tree-ring analysis and satellite imagery to date changes beavers have made to the tundra landscape since 2008. This expansion, driven by climate change and increased shrubification, impacts permafrost stability, water flow, fish populations, and local livelihoods, particularly for the Inuvialuit community. The Imaryuk Monitors collaborated on the study, which was funded by the Canada-Inuit Nunangat-United Kingdom Arctic Research Programme.
