A new study led by the Oskar Klein Centre and the LYRA collaboration, with contributions from Durham University and the University of Hawaiʻi, has used unprecedented simulations to show how ultra-faint dwarf galaxies can reflect the conditions of the early Universe. Researchers Azadeh Fattahi and Shaun Brodie found that these small galaxies are highly sensitive to early radiation environments, influencing whether they form stars or remain dark matter halos. The study, published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, suggests that future observations from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory could use these galaxies to constrain early-Universe physics, complementing discoveries by the James Webb Space Telescope. The simulations, run on the COSMA 8 supercomputer, took over six months and generated 300 terabytes of data.
