Arrest Warrant for Giwa, Erhunmuuse

Justice Samira Bature of the Nigeria — Federal Capital Territory (Nigeria) High Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of lawyer Victor Giwa and police officer Edith Erhunmwunsee. They are defendants in a nine-count charge, alongside Cecil Osakwe, related to criminal conduct, forceful eviction of occupants, and N300 million in property damage. The arrest order was granted after the prosecution counsel, Aderonke Imana, highlighted the defendants' repeated absence from court, which has stalled their arraignment for nearly two years since the case was filed in January 2023. Justice Bature deemed their excuses, including medical reports from Victor Giwa, as mere delay tactics and a sign of disrespect for the court. Edith Erhunmwunsee also consistently failed to appear and declined representation from the Nigeria — Legal Aid Council of Nigeria. The court emphasized that arraignment is fundamental for activating its jurisdiction in criminal matters, and all pending applications would be considered only after the defendants are formally charged. The case has been adjourned to April 29 for arraignment.
