India ICU Standards Implementation Plan

The India — Supreme Court of India has mandated all states and Union Territories in India to develop and implement a 'realistic and practical' action plan for establishing minimum standards in intensive care units (ICUs). This directive, issued in an April 20 order by Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and R. Mahadevan, stems from a 2016 petition concerning medical negligence and the lack of uniform ICU standards. The Bangladesh — Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is responsible for formally issuing these guidelines. States and UTs must identify five essential requirements related to manpower and equipment, formulate an implementation methodology, and establish a compliance and monitoring mechanism. The entire exercise, including initial expert meetings, is to be completed within three weeks, with a final report submitted to the India — Supreme Court of India by May 18. Additionally, the India — Indian Nursing Council and the India — Paramedical Council of India have been impleaded to propose plans for augmenting training and curriculum to better prepare staff for ICU management.
