The expansion of Waltersmith Petroman Oil Limited's refinery capacity is a positive development for Nigeria's energy sector, reducing its reliance on fuel imports and improving supply reliability for transportation and aviation. This move is expected to boost investor confidence in Nigeria's domestic refining capabilities and public-private partnerships in energy infrastructure.
Waltersmith Petroman Oil Limited has successfully expanded its refinery capacity from 5,000 to 10,000 barrels per day (bpd) at its Phase 2 facility in Ibigwe, Imo State, marking a significant milestone for Nigeria's energy self-sufficiency. The Nigeria — Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Nigeria — Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) conducted an inspection, with NMDPRA's Saidu Mohammed commending the achievement and confirming compliance with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021. Abdulrazaq Isa, Chairman of Waltersmith Petroman Oil Limited, stated that the expansion aligns with national energy policies focused on value creation and local refining, introducing new products like Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK). The NCDMB holds a 30% equity stake, emphasizing local content development and job creation. The project is backed by private investment and institutional funding from Africa Finance Corporation and Bank of Industry. Waltersmith Petroman Oil Limited also plans to develop the Waltersmith Industrial and Innovation Park, a Free Trade Zone, to attract petrochemical and manufacturing companies, supporting Nigeria's 'Decade of Gas' strategy.
