The new National Textbook Ranking System in Nigeria is expected to positively impact the education sector by improving quality and standardization, potentially benefiting publishers of high-quality educational materials. Conversely, publishers of substandard or unranked textbooks may face reduced market access, leading to a shake-up in the publishing industry.

Nigeria's Federal Government, through the Nigeria — Federal Ministry of Interior (Nigeria) and led by Minister Tunji Alausa and Minister of State Suwaiba Said Ahmad, has introduced a National Textbook Ranking System for primary, junior, and senior secondary schools. This initiative, effective from September 2026, aims to enhance quality assurance and standardization in the education sector by addressing the proliferation of textbooks. The Nigeria — Raw Materials Research and Development Council will continue to approve textbooks but will now also rank them based on rigorous evaluation by expert committees. Only a limited number of top-ranked textbooks will be approved, and any unranked textbook will be prohibited from use in Nigerian schools, regardless of prior licensing.
