The launch of simplified trade toolkits and initiatives by Nigeria under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is expected to significantly boost non-oil exports and enhance economic integration across Africa. This move aims to make trade more accessible for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and informal traders, potentially increasing Nigeria's trade volume and improving its economic outlook.
Nigeria's Federal Government, led by Minister Jumoke Oduwole, has launched simplified trade books and toolkits in English, Hausa, and Arabic to ease business processes and boost participation in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This initiative, part of President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, aims to simplify complex trade rules for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and informal traders. Regulatory agencies will provide on-the-spot services, and plans include live export simulations and a 'One Local Government, One Export Product' initiative. Nigeria has already seen gains, including a 75% reduction in freight costs on selected African routes via an air cargo corridor. Nigeria — Kano State, a key commercial hub, is actively leveraging AfCFTA opportunities. The AfCFTA Secretariat also selected Nigeria as the pilot country for its Simplified Trade Regime (STR) in West Africa, further emphasizing Nigeria's role in advancing intra-African trade.
