Supreme Court Sides with First Choice

The United States — Supreme Court of the United States unanimously sided with First Choice Women s Resource Centers, a faith-based pregnancy center, in a procedural victory. The ruling allows First Choice Women s Resource Centers to sue in federal court over a subpoena issued by then-Democratic Attorney General Matthew Platkin of United States — New Jersey. The subpoena sought donor lists and other information as part of an investigation into whether the center misled people to discourage abortions. First Choice Women s Resource Centers argued that the investigation was baseless and the demand for donor lists threatened its First Amendment rights to free speech and association. The American Civil Liberties Union also supported First Choice Women s Resource Centers' First Amendment concerns. The Trump administration, through the United States — United States Department of Justice, also weighed in to support First Choice Women s Resource Centers. This decision does not resolve the underlying case but grants First Choice Women s Resource Centers access to federal court to challenge the subpoena.
