OpenAI Sued Over Tumbler Ridge Shooting

Family members of victims from the 2026 Tumbler Ridge shooting have filed multiple lawsuits in U.S. federal court against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. The lawsuits allege that OpenAI identified the shooter, 2026 Tumbler Ridge shooting, as a credible threat eight months before the attack but failed to alert law enforcement, reportedly to protect the company's potential US$1-trillion IPO. The shooter used ChatGPT to plan the attack, which resulted in nine deaths, including several children, and multiple injuries. OpenAI's internal safety team had recommended contacting police after flagging violent conversations, but Sam Altman and other leadership allegedly overruled this. Although 2026 Tumbler Ridge shooting's account was deactivated, she was able to create a new one and continue planning the attack. The plaintiffs, represented by attorney Jay Edelson, are seeking over US$1 billion in damages and a court order for OpenAI to overhaul its safety practices, including mandatory law enforcement referral protocols. OpenAI has stated it has strengthened safeguards and that the events are a tragedy, with Sam Altman issuing an apology. This event is part of a growing trend of lawsuits against AI companies for allegedly facilitating self-harm, mental illness, and violence, with Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier also investigating ChatGPT's role in a separate shooting.
