Orleans Parish Sheriff Indicted After Jailbreak

Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson and Chief Financial Officer Bianka Brown have been indicted on multiple felony counts following a brazen jailbreak in May 2025, where 10 inmates escaped from a New Orleans jail. Susan Hutson faces 30 counts, including malfeasance, obstruction of justice, and falsifying public records, while Bianka Brown faces 20 similar charges. United States — Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill stated that Susan Hutson's refusal to comply with legal requirements and take minimal precautions directly contributed to the escape. The jailbreak involved inmates crawling through a hole behind a toilet, scaling a barbed wire fence, and not being discovered missing for over seven hours. All escapees were eventually recaptured. A maintenance worker, Sterling and Wilson, was also arrested for allegedly assisting the escape. Susan Hutson, who lost her re-election campaign, attributed the jailbreak to understaffing and major design flaws, while state officials criticized her poor management.
