The successful management of fertilizer supply by India, despite the West Asia crisis, ensures stability in the agricultural sector, which is positive for the broader economy. Maintaining stable maximum retail prices for fertilizers also helps control inflation and supports farmer profitability.

India's government announced that domestic urea production reached 3.74 million tonnes in March-April, nearly matching last year's levels despite the West Asia crisis. To address any shortfall for the Kharif 2026 season, India secured 3.7 million tonnes of imported urea through a global tender. Total domestic fertilizer production stood at 6.23 million tonnes, with imports at 1.53 million tonnes during the same period. Aparna S Sharma, Additional Secretary, Department of Fertilizers, confirmed that fertilizer availability remains robust, with supplies exceeding requirements. The government also floated a global tender for 1.9 million tonnes of phosphatic fertilizers. Current stocks for Kharif 2026 stand at 19.33 million tonnes against a requirement of 39.04 million tonnes, representing approximately 50% of the total need. The maximum retail price of fertilizers has remained unchanged.
