Lebanon's Internal Rift Over Israel Talks

A growing rift between top Lebanese officials, President Joseph Aoun and Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, has hindered Saudi Arabian efforts to foster a united position for Lebanon in negotiations with Israel. Joseph Aoun advocates for direct talks and potential normalization of ties, while Nabih Berri, an ally of Hezbollah, opposes direct talks and seeks only a non-aggression pact. Saudi Arabia, through its envoy Prince Yazid bin Farhan, is mediating to prevent instability and ensure Lebanon's peace process aligns with broader regional strategies, including the Abraham Accords. The United States, under President Donald Trump, has also offered to facilitate talks. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has resulted in significant casualties and displacement in Lebanon, further complicating the political landscape.
