Pentagon Inks AI Deals, Excludes Anthropic

The United States — United States Department of Defense has finalized deals with seven major tech companies: Alphabet Inc., Microsoft, Amazon — Amazon Web Services, Nvidia, OpenAI, Reflection, and SpaceX, to integrate their artificial intelligence capabilities into classified military systems. This initiative aims to enhance warfighter decision-making and operational efficiency. Notably, Anthropic was excluded from these contracts due to a public dispute and legal battle with the United States — United States Department of Defense over ethical concerns regarding AI use in warfare, particularly concerning autonomous weapons and surveillance. This exclusion followed actions by former President Donald Trump to ban Anthropic's chatbot Claude from federal agencies and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's attempt to label Anthropic a supply chain risk. OpenAI had previously secured a deal to replace Anthropic in classified environments. The United States — United States Department of Defense's chief technology officer, Emil Michael, emphasized the importance of having multiple AI providers. Some companies, like Nvidia and Reflection, are new to defense contracts and are providing open-source AI models, partly to counter China's advancements in AI.
