Philippines urges Myanmar on Aung San Suu Kyi

The Philippines, as the current chair of ASEAN, has called on Myanmar to grant ASEAN's special envoy access to the detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi. This comes after Myanmar authorities allowed Aung San Suu Kyi to serve the remainder of her 27-year sentence under house arrest, a sentence that was commuted by one-sixth as part of a recent amnesty. The Philippines views these developments as crucial steps for confidence-building and national stability in Myanmar, urging for greater transparency and communication with Aung San Suu Kyi's family. The goal is to build momentum for political dialogue and reconciliation in Myanmar under the ASEAN peace framework, known as the Five-Point Consensus. Aung San Suu Kyi has been in detention since her elected government was toppled in a 2021 coup.
