A new annual study on democracy, the Democracy Perception Index, has revealed that global perceptions of the United States have deteriorated for a second consecutive year, now ranking worse than views of Russia and China. Commissioned by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and conducted by Nira Dynamics, the survey attributes this decline primarily to the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump. These policies include widespread tariffs, threats to control Denmark — Greenland (a NATO member through Denmark), cuts in aid to Ukraine, and the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, which caused a spike in oil prices. These actions have severely strained the NATO alliance, with Donald Trump even considering withdrawing from NATO after European countries declined to send navies to the Strait of Hormuz. Anders Fogh Rasmussen, founder of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, expressed concern over the rapid decline in the United States' global standing.
